Cape Elizabeth Lighthouses

Late start this morning since we got in so late last night.  After an obligatory stop at Dunkin' Donuts we headed to the Portland Head Lighthouse and Fort Williams Park. What a great park! Its very large, with trails all along the coast's rocky shoreline. The Lighthouse is very picturesque. Built in 1790 and still operating. The lobster roll and lobster bisque was awesome!

Some interesting history here, in the "who knew" category. During the Spanish/American war, 1899-1902, the military planted mines in Portland harbor to protect against submarines. (really?) The mines could be detonated by an electric charge delivered by a lookout. Although never used, they were also active during WWI. It was called a "mining casement".

Later in the afternoon we continued down the coast, through Cape Elizabeth,  to "Twin Lights" State Park, which did not include two lighthouses nearby. But there were lots of trails along the shoreline. Interesting rock formations here; looked like petrified trees!

Surprise stop on the way back to town - pick your own strawberries! Great fried seafood dinner at a place called "Docks" - reminded us of Newick's, remember Newicks?

Weather today could not have been better. Mid 70s, hazy sun, pretty humid. Tomorrow we head inland to NH.
